Common Admission Test or CAT is the most famous entrance exam for MBA/PGDM admissions. CAT scores are accepted by the 20 IIMS and over a 1000 management institutes across the nation. This year’s examination- CAT 2018 is scheduled to be conducted on 25th November, 2018. It will be held by IIM Calcutta. Since there is no Counseling or Common Admission Process for CAT, the admissions are conducted by institutes individually. Selection criteria and minimum cut off marks are even fixed individually by every Institute.
For CAT 2018, multiple MBA Institutes involving the IIMs are expected to release their admission criteria and selection procedure from August 2018 onwards. Many management institutes involving FMS, SPJIMR, IMT begin their registration process for admissions much before the CAT exam is conducted, however the IIMs start their admission process after the announcement of CAT results.
Here is an overview of IIM Selection Process:
For admission in all the 20 IIMs, basic eligibility criteria is 50% marks in Graduation and CAT scores. But that’s not all. The aspirant must score above the CAT cut-off marks fixed for that year. IIM Admission is based on three parameters involving, CAT score, group discussion and personal interview, academic record. Firstly, each test takers is shortlisted on the basis of his/her CAT score viz-a-viz CAT cutoffs fixed by each IIM individually for that year. Minimum cut-offs of the IIMs generally over 90 percentile for General candidates, which means, those who will score above 90 percentile in CAT 2018 will be eligible to apply. On the other hand, cut-offs of newer IIMs range between 80-60 percentile.
The second phase of IIM admission involve Group Discuss and Personal Interview [GD/PI]. This stage is the decider for the selection panel finalize the candidate on the basis of performance of GD/PI. In the third stage, the aspirants are scored on the basis of their academic performance. Here’s a break up of parameters on which aspirants are selected:

The aspirants must note that the top IIMs lay a lot of emphasis on, academic record. It has been seen in the past that many aspirants with 99 percentile were rejected as their academic performance didn’t match their CAT performance. CAT 2018 registration procedure is expected to start in the last week of July or first week of August, 2018. The official notification for CAT 2018 is yet to be released. The CAT 2018 applications will be accepted in online mode and the CAT 2018 Admit cards will be issued in the initial week of November 2018. CAT 2018 result is expected to be declared in the first week of January 2019.
