In recent times the medical study has grew in Bangladesh. It has become one of the favorite destinations for medical students around the world and especially students from India, Nepal, Sri Lanka etc. has been choosing Bangladesh as their first preference for MBBS.
The Medical Degrees students get from Bangladesh Universities has been recognized by various institutions including MCI (Medical Council of India). In recent times Bangladesh also has the highest number of students who has passed MCI screening test and in this part of the world the facilities & standards it provides to the medical student is 2nd best after India. India and Bangladesh both give emphasis on clinical based medical study whereas this standard and quality cannot be found in even many developed countries.
Medical study in Bangladesh faced many changes and challenges and since pre-liberation period up to 1988 an undergraduate medical education was set-up in Bangladesh. Then in 1988 a great change was brought in curriculum by making it more community oriented. Later in the year 2002 a new curriculum was introduced in Bangladesh for the purpose of qualitative improvement in medical education. This problem oriented curriculum was introduced for undergraduate medical students after the recommendations by medical educationists and Bangladesh Medical and Dental council approved it.
MBBS is a 5 year course and this new curriculum of 2002 divided this 5 year course into 4 parts. After completing 5 years the students have go through compulsory rotatory internship of 1 year which can be done in their own country by students. However, this 1 year rotatory internship is optional for Indian doctors. The course has semester system and each semester consist of 6 months. Further the course is divided into 3 phases, viz., Pre-Clinical, Para Clinical and Clinical Phase.
The 4 parts the 5 year course divided into:-
(i) In first 1 and ½ year there are three subjects (Pre-Clinical Phase)
(ii) In second part, the duration is of 1 year and has 2 subjects (Para Clinical Phase)
-Forensic Medicine and Toxicology
(iii) In third part, duration 1 year with 3 subjects
-Pharmacology and Therapeutic
(iv) In last part, duration is of 1 and ½ year with 3 subjects (Clinical Phase)
-Obstetrics and Gynecology
Universities in Bangladesh are approved by MCI and so the MBBS study pattern is same as Medical Council of India (MCI).
